Episode 74: When You’re A Hot Mess
Why You Feel Like a Hot Mess (And How to Finally Feel Calm Again)
Most women don't wake up wanting to snap at their kids, argue with their husband, forget appointments, or feel like they're constantly behind.
Yet so many do.
If you've ever wondered, Why can't I just get it together? this episode offers a completely different answer than you might expect.
The problem probably isn't your schedule, your husband, your children, or the endless laundry.
The problem is that your nervous system is overwhelmed.
And the beautiful news is that it can change.
You're Not Failing. You're Dysregulated.
When life feels chaotic, it's easy to believe the solution is getting more organized.
A better planner.
A cleaner house.
A more helpful husband.
More discipline.
But none of those things address what's happening underneath.
When your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, your brain isn't operating from clarity. It's operating from protection.
Everything feels urgent.
Small problems feel enormous.
You become reactive instead of intentional.
You yell when you wanted to stay calm.
You scroll your phone even though you know you have things to do.
You procrastinate.
You forget.
You shut down.
Not because you're lazy.
Because your body believes you're under threat.
The Difference Between Reacting and Responding
One of the biggest shifts Brooke teaches is learning to recognize the emotional "zones" we all move through.
When we're regulated, we can think clearly, solve problems, communicate well, and feel connected.
When we're dysregulated, we become reactive.
We criticize.
Control.
Overthink.
Withdraw.
Or completely shut down.
The goal isn't to never experience stress.
The goal is learning how to return to calm more quickly.
The Tool That Changes Everything
One of the simplest practices Brooke teaches is what she calls:
Stop. Drop. Breathe.
Instead of reacting immediately when emotions rise:
Stop.
Drop your attention into your body.
Breathe through the emotion instead of resisting it.
Emotions aren't problems to fix.
They're experiences to feel.
Research suggests that an emotion itself passes through the body surprisingly quickly when we allow ourselves to experience it instead of fighting it. It's often our resistance, avoidance, or rumination that keeps us stuck.
When we stop resisting, our nervous system begins to settle.
And once we're calm, everything else becomes easier.
Nothing Around You Has to Change
One of the most freeing ideas in this episode is that peace doesn't come from controlling your circumstances.
Your dishes can still be in the sink.
Your children can still be loud.
Your husband can still be having a hard day.
Your calendar can still be full.
The external chaos may remain exactly the same.
But when your nervous system is regulated, your experience of that chaos changes completely.
You respond instead of react.
You connect instead of control.
You solve problems instead of becoming overwhelmed by them.
The Woman You're Trying to Become Already Exists
So many women spend years trying to become more patient.
More organized.
More confident.
More peaceful.
But Brooke offers a different perspective.
Instead of waiting until life is perfect to become that woman, begin practicing being her now.
Ask yourself:
How would she respond here?
What would help her feel grounded?
What does she believe about herself?
What would she choose next?
Small moments of regulation eventually become a new way of living.
You Don't Need a Different Life
You need a different relationship with your emotions.
When you learn to regulate your nervous system, you stop living in survival mode.
You stop waiting for everyone else to change before you can feel better.
You begin creating peace from the inside out.
And that changes everything.
Not because life suddenly becomes easier.
Because you become stronger, calmer, and more connected in the middle of it.
That's where real transformation begins.
